Resting on 5,000 acres of national wildlife preserve, this unique home is an ideal vacation retreat..Cozy enough for 2 but spacious enough for 8 or more, this 4 bedroom, 3 bath house has an open floor plan with spectacular views. Bird watchers would be in heaven, as would any nature lovers. The house has a beautiful back yard with water views across the bayou. We have a private pool that’s ideal for lap swimming or just playing in the water. And the Gulf Coast beaches are just a 10 minute walk away. The formal dining area sits in a glassed lanai overlooking the bayou and is open to the main living area, which sports vaulted ceilings looking up to the upstairs balcony. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet with a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The guest bedroom on the first floor has a double bed and the two upstairs each have two twin beds. Also upstairs is a TV and reading area with an office with free high-speed, wireless Internet. One of the couches in the TV area is a pull-out bed. By far the thing we like most to do on Sanibel is nothing at all. It’s the perfect place to retreat from a world that is obsessed by “busy-ness.” If you’re like us, the spontaneity of an unplanned day is heavenly. Having said that there are no shortage of things to do here. Here are some of our top picks. Bike Riding. Sanibel has miles and miles of bike paths. And the island is flat, so pedaling is a breeze. Single and multi-speed bikes can be rented from Billy’s (our favorite) 239-472-3620. Bird Watching. Sanibel is a haven for birds. Some of the best birding on the whole island is right in our back yard. The house looks out over Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. A glance on any given day generally includes many different species. Also see information on nature preserves and kayaking below. Beaches. The best beach on the whole island is a short walk (and even shorter bike ride) from our house. There’s also plenty of parking if you want to drive your gear down. Bowman’s Beach falls at a bend in the shoreline which makes it a wonderful wide open beach (other beaches on the island are pretty narrow). It’s western view makes it a perfect spot for sunsets, and with absolutely no development for miles along the coast, it’s an ideal place to take advantage of Sanibel’s legendary shelling. Kayaking. There are two kayaking experiences not to miss when you are here. The first is at the Tarpon Bay section of the Ding Darling National Refuge. They have paddling trails into the mangrove swamps, and they sponsor a sunset paddle out to the tiny roosting islands in Tarpon Bay where many sea birds nest and hatch their young. The second is Captiva Kayak Company/Wilsside Adventures (239-395-2925). They host sea kayak trips out of Tween Waters Inn on Captiva where sitings of dolphin and Manatee are common place. Nature Preserves At our home, you live on the biggest nature preserve on the island – the 5,000 acre Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. However, it’s still worth a trip into the preserve by bike or car (we go every day for a sunset bike ride). Also check out the smaller Ding Darling refuge off Tarpon Bay Road and the Sanibel/Captiva Conservation Commission land and nature center off San Cap Rd. Restaurants There’s several nice restaurants on Sanibel. Here’s some of our favorites. The Mermaid Restaurant 239-472-1242; original cuisine and fabulous desserts. Traders 239-472-7242; informal, inexpensive and tasty. The Bean of Sanibel, great coffee and yummy lunches (239-395-1919). You may also want to check out Captiva where there are a numbr of restaurants in the town center. Movies. The movie theater in Bailey’s shopping plaza (239-472-1701) shows current releases in a quaint, small town theater. There’s also a video rental store on the other side of the plaza (239-472-0077). Art Galleries. Sanibel is loaded with local talent whose works are displayed at a number of galleries on the island. Here are a couple we’d recommend. Shopping. We get a failing grade when it comes to shopping. But if you like to shop, there’s no shortage of opportunities. On island, there are several interesting shopping plazas on Periwinkle Way – the main road through town. In addition, on the mainland just off the island causeway, there is a large outlet shopping center with high-end outlet stores. Parasailing We haven’t gone yet, but dear friends have and loved it. They used an outfit on Captiva called Yolo Watersports at 239-472-9656. The Library. Sanibel is blessed with a fabulous library. It’s tucked away behind the center of town. We’d suggest you check it out! (239-472-2483) COME CHECK OUT OUR PIECE OF PARADISE. YOU'LL BE SO GLAD YOU DID!!
